The seriousness of the Avian Influenza in The Netherlands can never be imagined by us, especially if we are in an area that is relatively free from poultry diseases of all kinds! Word, via England, is that of the millions of birds destroyed, mostly of the commercial poultry industry, nearby purebred breeders who had their stock destroyed, perhaps some that have had their birds for many years, may never renew their breeding projects. Destruction of birds of certain strains could be a great loss to some breeds of Poultry, Dutch Bantams, included.
In 1994, I visited a farm with Barnevelders that had been a closed flock for 60 years. This was in the middle of the area where the worst of the AI centered. I cannot imagine that the 2 generation family farm was spared?? The Poultry Museum is located in the town of Barneveld, and located in such a beautiful part of Holland.
